OUR RESEARCH
The need for therapeutic approaches based on the concepts of integrative biology and pharmacology stems from the substantial rethinking and redefinition of network regulators of metabolism in physiological and physio-pathological conditions.
The concept of integrative biology and pharmacology consists of two integration’s levels seeking for the development of innovative therapies for diseases such as neurodegenerative syndromes, cancer, chronic inflammation, autoimmune syndromes, for which medicine and pharmacology have not yet provided definitive answers:
- integration between traditional pharmacology and therapeutic approaches based on the re-equilibrium of homeostatic balance and the correction/elimination of the allostatic overload;
- integration of skills and expertise that develops synergies between biomedical researchers and those involved in engineering, computer science, chemical / physical researches. Our research work is focused on studying the physiopathology of the regulatory mechanisms that enable the integration and communication between different cell types, organs and systems in the body. Established or innovative pharmacological approaches are evaluated together with new methods of drug delivery and integration of pharmacological with supportive non-pharmacological therapies, in contexts such as neural plasticity and neurodegeneration, spinal cord injury, neuro-oncology and pain syndromes.
